In most courts, probate judges are assigned to the family division of the circuit court in order to provide judicial coverage of the caseload. In Branch County, Judge Kirk Kashian is the presiding judge over matters concerning the Juvenile Unit, of the 15th Circuit Court, Family Division.
The Juvenile Unit’s jurisdiction includes:
- Status offenses
- Abuse and neglect
- Termination of parental rights
Action by the Court is governed by the Michigan Juvenile Code and Michigan Court Rules.
Michigan Supreme Court’s Administrative orders issued to protect the public during the COVID pandemic pursuant to the Michigan Constitution, Article VI, Section 4 are STILL IN EFFECT. To that end, Branch County Courts are required to continue adhering to guidance regarding FACE COVERINGS, SOCIAL DISTANCING, and COURT CAPACITY.
Generally, Family Division, Juvenile Court proceedings are open to the public. However, there may be health and safety reasons that result in participants being unable or uncomfortable to appear in person.
